Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University researchers and partners reported a new type of TALENs for plants and exhibiting high efficiency in gene editing. Their findings are published in Plant Molecular Biology.

TALEN-mediated gene editing has been known for its high specificity, independence from epigenetic modification, lack of PAM limitation, and feasibility for organelle editing without the need for RNA binding. However, plant researchers find the assembly of TALEN vectors challenging and laborious compared with other gene editing tools. This led the researchers to develop ZQTALEN.

ZQTALEN is characterized by the optimization of codon usage, assembly method of TALE repeat array, and vector backbone components. Therefore, this new tool has an easy, flexible, and efficient assembly and less repeated sequences in the final vector. The researchers successfully tested ZQTALEN in a rice gene, leading to high-frequency acquisition of rice mutants.

Based on the findings of the study, ZQTALEN is a versatile tool for genetic research in plants.
