VIB Submits Application for New Field Trials of GM Maize

The VIB in Belgium has submitted an application for a new field trial for genetically modified (GM) maize with an improved growth factor called AN3. The AN3 gene activates other genes involved in plant growth. When it is overexpressed, cell division continues for a longer period and important plant parts such as leaves become larger, therefore increasing biomass.

Greenhouse experiments also showed that the plants will continue to grow better during drought, indicating that the plants would likely be better adapted to the threat of global warming.

The application has been requested by VIB, but the trial is being carried out in collaboration with the Flanders Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food (ILVO). When the application is approved, the trial will be conducted on the ILVO site in Wetteren. The application is available to the public from January 14 to February 13, 2020, on the website of the Federal Public Service Health. During that period, it is also available at the town hall in Wetteren.
